But sometimes we don’t know what we want until it’s right in front of us. Sarah recalled, “Being with Jesse was this vertiginous feeling of being understood all at once, in a way I never had been. And I did just know, very suddenly.” She said she wonders if that was because, by then, she had dated many different kinds of people, and in the process learned a lot about herself. “Each break-up isn’t just saying no to a person, but to a certain kind of life or lifestyle,” she said. “When I met Jesse, at 27, I was old enough to not get confused between thinking someone is amazing, and thinking they would be amazing for me.”
